Smart Pump Data Tracking for Precision Agriculture

How we optimized fluid usage in agricultural machines using IoT and mobile technology.
Overview
The Client
Our client is a company specializing in the optimization of production processes using IoT solutions. One of its key focus areas is agriculture, where its technology is integrated into machines equipped with pumps to efficiently distribute fluids (e.g., manure, fertilizers) in the fields.
Industries:
Agriculture, IoT

Technologies:
Modbus, Objective-C, Swift
Business Need

Agriculture has always been a fundamental industry, essential for daily life. With the rise of modern technology, IoT has become a game-changer in optimizing farming processes. Different crops require varying amounts of fertilizer or other fluids, making it crucial to track fluid usage in real-time.

The client needed a mobile application for agricultural machine operators to:

  • Monitor fluid consumption in real-time
  • Adjust flow rates as needed to optimize usage
  • Prevent overuse or underuse of fertilizers
  • Improve efficiency and productivity in farming operations
Solution

We developed an IoT-powered system that integrates with agricultural machines, enabling real-time fluid monitoring and control through an iOS application. Pumps were equipped with analog and digital sensors connected to an Arduino platform, capturing key data such as speed, pressure, flow rate, and remaining fluid levels.

Using Modbus TCP over WiFi, this data is seamlessly transmitted to the mobile app, allowing operators to track and adjust fluid distribution with precision. By incorporating device speed tracking, the system optimized fluid application per hectare, reducing waste and improving efficiency in agricultural operations.

Business Value
  • Enhanced Agricultural Efficiency

The system optimized fluid usage, ensuring that fertilizers and manure were applied precisely and effectively, preventing waste and increasing crop yield.

  • Improved Resource Management

Farmers and machine operators gained real-time visibility into fluid levels and distribution, reducing costs associated with overuse or inefficiencies.

  • Seamless Data Tracking & Automation

The IoT solution automated fluid monitoring, eliminating manual tracking and enabling better data-driven decisions for agricultural processes.

Core features
  • IoT-enabled pump tracking: Equipped pumps with analog and digital sensors connected to an Arduino platform
  • Real-time data collection: Monitored key parameters such as:
    • Pump speed (rpm)
    • Pressure (Bar)
    • Flow rate (m³/min)
    • Estimated remaining fluid in the tank (m³)
  • Seamless data transmission: Used Modbus TCP protocol over WiFi to send data from pumps to the iOS app
  • Precision fluid management: Integrated device speed tracking to calculate fluid distribution per hectare
  • User-friendly mobile app: Enabled machine operators to adjust fluid flow and track usage directly from an iPad

Full Story

The client approached us with a challenge: turn a simple pump into an intelligent IoT device that could provide real-time analytics on fluid usage and automate decision-making in agricultural fields.

To achieve this, we equipped pumps with analog and digital sensors connected to an Arduino-based system. These sensors captured data such as pressure, speed, and flow rates, sending it to the mobile application via Modbus TCP over WiFi.

The iOS app acted as the central control hub, allowing machine operators to monitor and manage fluid flow directly from an iPad. The system also calculated the amount of fluid used per hectare, helping optimize fertilizer application and ensure efficient resource utilization.

By integrating IoT, real-time data analysis, and mobile technology, we created a seamless, automated solution that transformed agricultural fluid management.
